“Three stooges are sitting here working with foreign powers,” Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said.

New Delhi:

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, reduced to a minority in the Assembly and struggling to stay in power, today refused to step down and alleged there was a foreign plot against his government. There are enemies inside the country who are cooperating with them, added Mr Khan, who nearly lost a majority in the 342-member National Assembly after the defection of two key allies.

“We are getting messages from some foreign countries… They say they will forgive Pakistan if Imran Khan leaves,” he said in an address to the nation tonight, amid buzz on devious efforts to reach an agreement between the prime minister and the common opposition to dissolve the lower house.

Mr Khan, 69, however, said he would fight – “until the last ball” – rather than resign or strike a deal. Referring to Sunday’s vote of confidence, he said that is when “the future of the country will be decided”.

Mr Khan’s Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) needs 172 votes in the lower house out of 342 to foil the opposition’s bid to overthrow him. The opposition claimed it had the support of 175 MPs and the prime minister should resign immediately.

If Mr Khan is unable to prove his majority in Sunday’s vote, he will be the country’s first prime minister to be ousted by a vote of no confidence.

Referring to the plot, which he first mentioned three days ago, Imran Khan claimed on national television today that there had been messages that “if they don’t oust me , Pakistan will have to face difficult circumstances”.

“Three stooges are sitting here working with foreign powers. They want Imran Khan to be ousted and this certain person to take this place and everything will be fine then,” he said. “If you think your plot will succeed, I want to tell you that I will fight with it. There is nothing they can do,” he said.

“I bear my own expenses, I live in my own houses, I have no factories,” he added, castigating political opponent Nawaz Sharif.

There was also a broad clue about one of the foreign powers that might be involved.

“People said we were collaborators with the United States. So many Pakistanis have sacrificed their lives. said that if there was a terrorist incident in the United States, we should help them, but it was not our war to fight,” he said.

“I chose to enter politics to realize the vision of our founders,” he said. “Most of the people before joining politics are unknown names. But that was not my case. I was endowed with everything… I would not have entered politics, if Allah had not granted me the faith,” he added.

No Pakistani prime minister has completed a full five-year term. On the other hand, no one has ever been ousted by a motion of censure. Mr Khan is the third prime minister to take up the challenge.

Highlights of Imran Khan’s speech in Pakistan:

  1. Pakistan has reached a “decisive moment” in its history.
  2. I’m lucky that God gave me everything – fame, wealth, everything. I don’t need anything today, he gave me everything for which I am very grateful. Pakistan is only 5 years older than me, I am part of the first generation of countries born after independence.
  3. As a child, I remember Pakistan rising to the top. South Korea had come to Pakistan to learn how we are progressing, Malaysian princes were studying with me in school. The Middle East was coming to our universities. I saw it all go down, saw my country being insulted.
  4. I had many friends in India and in the United States. I have no ill will against anyone. I just condemn their policy.
  5. We were told that if we did not support the United States, they would turn against us like a wounded bear. During 9/11 we said that if there was a terrorist incident in the United States we should help them, but that was not our war to fight.
  6. People said we were collaborators with the United States. So many Pakistanis sacrificed their lives, did anyone thank us for that? Did someone say Shukriya, Pakistan? So many people died in drone attacks, 80 people died after an attack in a madrasa.
  7. After becoming Prime Minister, I decided that our policy would not be against anyone. Our only dispute with India is when international law violated Kashmir.
  8. We receive messages from some foreign countries. It’s against our people. They say they will forgive Pakistan if Imran Khan leaves. But he says if they fail to oust me, Pakistan will face difficult circumstances. He says if Imran Khan remains prime minister, Pakistan’s ties with them will deteriorate and the nation will face difficulties.
  9. Three stooges sit here and work with foreign powers. They want Imran Khan to be ousted and that certain person to take that place and everything will be fine then. But do you want someone accused of scamming to drive you?
  10. Nawaz Sharif met Prime Minister Modi in Nepal in a secret meeting, according to Barkha Dutt’s book.
  11. I have always said that we want an independent foreign policy. When you can’t ask yourself who is bombing your country, what is your credibility?
  12. I’m not against anyone. But my 22 million people are my priority. So Shehbaz Sharif says I shouldn’t have said “absolutely not”, where were you when there were attacks on the country
  13. Many people said that this document was fake. I showed it to the Cabinet, to Parliament, to seasoned journalists. There are more dangerous things in there, things I haven’t told you about.
  14. This Sunday there will be a decision whether the country will go to a corrupt regime.
  15. They say I destroyed the country but I only ruled it for 3 years. I can dispute that what I have done for the past 3.5 years has never been achieved.
  16. I will not quit. I will fight until the last ball. I’ll wait to see who sells their soul that day.
  17. These people are selling themselves, selling the country, its sovereignty. But people are not going to forgive or forget that. They would always remember that you sold your country.
  18. If you think your plot will succeed, I want to tell you, I will fight with it. They can’t do anything. I bear my own expenses, I live in my own houses, I have no factories.
  19. Allah gave me the strength to fight and I will. Came here after a lot of struggle.
