India-Nepal rail connectivity is boosted with the start of passenger rail service between the converted and newly calibrated Jaynagar and Kurtha! In a bid to enhance Indo-Nepal connectivity and improve trade activities, the governments of India and Nepal have commissioned the Jaynagar (Bihar, India) – Kurtha (Nepal) section of the rail link. This railway, which will enhance connectivity between the two countries, promotes religious tourism and establishes rail connectivity between Mithilanchal in India and Janakpur Dham in Nepal, according to Indian Railways. The Government of Nepal has established the Nepal Railway Company Limited (NRCL) which has been given responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the railway services and the railway system in the Jaynagar-Kurtha section. The NRCL has awarded the contract for the start of railway operations at Jayanagar-Kurtha at Konkan Railway Zone.

Konkan Railways delivered two 5-car DEMU trains to NRCL and started the operationalization of the cross-border rail link from 02 April 2022 after the maiden run on this section. Initial passenger operations will commence with two 5-car DEMU trains which have been supplied by Konkan Railway Zone to the Government of Nepal under the supply contract awarded to KRCL with funding provided by the Government of Nepal. These rakes are developed by Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai and have various modern features.

Each 5-car DEMU trainset has 1600 HP propulsion along with other advanced features such as an AC coach, microprocessor-based AC-AC traction, electronic fuel injection, air suspension as well as toilets. The Nepalese government has finalized the color scheme of these trains based on the Nepali national flag. NRCL engaged Konkan Railways, for the initial takeover as well as to provide operation and maintenance support for a period of one year. The Konkan Railway, under this agreement, will undertake the operation and maintenance of these trainsets, provide training for Nepal Railway staff, provide 26 experts and minimum equipment, create basic systems for railway operations as well as technical support for the maintenance of railway tracks and signaling systems.
