TAPLEJUNG: Residents of Taplejung District have been lured by the expansion of private forests lured by handsome revenues, according to the Divisional Forestry Bureau.

The availability of feasible grants has also helped, the office said. The Bureau has awarded grants to eight farmers for the expansion of private forests in the current financial year, 2021/22.

The farmers received 100,000 rupees in subsidies each. The farmers who got the subsidies are hard workers and they got them for the expansion and maintenance of the private forest, said district chief Mahesh Kumar Pokharel.

There are many indicators for beneficiary selection to make the private forestry program effective, he said.

For the selection of beneficiaries, a focal team headed by the head of the divisional forestry office was formed.

The team representatives are drawn from the local government, Federation of Community Forestry Users of Nepal, Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Management Board.

The Divisional Forestry Office managed the nursery in six locations (Divisional Forestry Office, Pathibhara Sub-Division Office, Tokme, Tellok, Dovan, Santhakra and Tiringe) in the district.

The nurseries have 100,000 medicinal herb seedlings, 150,000 annual seedlings of various trees and 30,000 seedlings of perennial trees, the forestry office said.
